Overview

Steven Pynt has over 40 years’ experience in law, accounting, and business management.

After graduating in law, Steven completed his articled clerkship at Dwyer & Thomas Solicitors before working as a tax consultant with the accounting firm Duesburys, which subsequently merged with Ernst & Whinney.

History

In 1985 Steven established his own legal firm, and in 1988 merged his firm with Michell Sillar McPhee where he became a Partner. He subsequently established the firm Healy Pynt and later McDonald Pynt Lawyers with David McDonald. Steven remained a Director of that firm until March 2010, when he left to join drive through coffee franchisor, Muzz Buzz Franchising Pty Ltd.

Steven has held a number of Public and Private company board positions. He is currently chairman of listed public company Global Health Limited, and non-executive Director of Gondwana Resources Limited. He was a director of Muzz Buzz Franchising Pty Ltd from 2003 – 2017, being Managing Director from 2010 – 2015 and Legal Director from 2015 – 2017. In 2017 Steven resumed legal practice in the firm Thompson Pynt, and in 2018 re-joined David McDonald to form MP Commercial Lawyers.

Steven was previously Chairman of the Commercial Tribunal of Western Australia, (now part of the State Administrative Tribunal) which had jurisdiction in relation to  Commercial Tenancy legislation, Credit Act and other commercial disputes and applications. He also previously taught Ethics and Professional Responsibility to Articled Law Clerks, and tutored in law and ethics in undergraduate programs, and was a member of the Racing Penalties Appeal Tribunal.

Areas of Expertise

Steven’s main areas of practice are:

  • Franchising (acting for both franchisors and franchisees), including:
    • preparation of Franchise documents for franchisors;
    • review of franchise documents for franchisees;
    • acting for parties in disputes at mediations and in Court;
  • Business and Corporations Law including preparation and review of sale of business agreements and providing advice;
  • Trusts including preparation and review of Trust Deeds, preparation of Deeds of Variation and Deeds of Vesting;
  • Wills and Estate Planning including Testamentary Trusts, Enduring Powers of Attorney and Guardianship, and Advance Health Directives;
  • Probate and Letters of Administration.

Recognition

In addition to his law degrees from the University of Western Australia, Steven was awarded a Bachelor of Business (Accounting) from Curtin University of Technology, and an MBA and Master of Taxation from UWA.

Steven is a National Accredited Mediator and a member of Resolution Institute Inc. He is also a member of the commercial law committee of the Law Society, and previously a member of the Elder law committee.
